My Review

The movie Gifted is an inspiring yet interesting film. It was neat seeing Chris Evans (Captain American, Avengers) take on a completely different role in the movie. It was a more serious angle for him. He actually did a pretty good job. The little girl who plays his niece Mary, does a nice job for such a big role. Her very smart character induces raw emotion.

Parental Thoughts and Concerns

I highly recommend that the film be for 13+ as it’s PG-13. There is some harsh language and Chris Evan’s character drops the F-bomb in his sadness, anger, and frustration. The little girl in the film also uses a harsh word or two. I can’t remember which words exactly, but it is very evident. Frank Adler (Chris Evans) and his niece’s teacher Jenny Slate, end up connecting at a local bar and she comes home and stays the night with him. The two make out briefly on the bed (with clothes on), then it’s evident she stays the night as Mary comes home and sees her teacher sneaking out of the bathroom wrapped in the bedroom sheet.

I did laugh and cry in certain parts of the film. Frank and Mary’s landlady and best friend Roberta played by Octavia Spencer, is hilarious yet endearing. The film is a definite rollercoaster ride….

The story line is pretty raw and depicts real life moments and questions such as: “Do you believe in God and heaven? I like that the movie doesn’t sugar-coat real life moments as many go through these situations in life. I guess I wouldn’t view this film as entertainment, I would see this as a learning experience and a chance to talk about personal things and issues if needed.

I probably won’t be seeing the film again as it’s the type of film that gets the point across very well and you are just happy to see how it will all end.
